You can’t buy happiness but you can buy a frisbee which comes pretty close!
Hello and welcome to, The ‘Ultimate’ Sport, a blog designed to try and expand the popularity and reach of the magnificent sport which is Ultimate Frisbee. I fell in love with playing Ultimate at Glasgow University during my 3 years there with another year of playing at Aberdeen University on top of that. It is a sport which is growing here in the UK but needs a lot of work to change the attitude of British people towards it and to improve its accessibility to people outside of university.
On The ‘Ultimate’ Sport, do not expect in-depth tactical analyses or detailed throwing technique tutorials, the pieces on this site will be to help and engage those at the beginning of their time playing the game, to help convince people to start playing and to entertain those who already love the sport! I will freely admit that even after 4 years of playing, I was never at the top level going to National tournaments or European Championships like some of the amazing athletes I played with. I played at regional tournaments all over Scotland with some of the best players in Britain and was lucky enough to be coached by World Championship level players. They taught me a great deal about the sport in general and the University Ultimate scene is something I was deeply invested in during my student days. It wasn’t just a new sport and new skills that Glasgow University’s team Far Flung provided me with however, I gained two of my best friends at university through the club and the amazing social aspect of Ultimate is something I’ll touch on to in this blog.
For some (like those who coached me and played with me), Ultimate is what they dedicate their time to at university. The sport is almost a way of life. For me however, Ultimate was always a way for me to de-stress, have fun, make friends and take my mind off university work for many hours per week. Don’t get me wrong, at tournaments I was as competitive as anyone else but I felt I needed my main drive at uni to be completing my degree successfully. I wouldn’t have started playing if my cousin hadn’t played it at university before I did and this linking is part of what is needed to grow the sport, the more people who play the more who will similarly pick it up. For everyone reading who hasn’t played Ultimate before, if you’re looking for a sport which is new, dynamic, inclusive, exciting and challenging, then Ultimate is for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough and that is the reason I am writing this blog!
